The Entity Neutralization Department
A Brief Look Into Ancient History
The Founding
Centuries prior to joining the Yume United Defense Force, the Entity Neutralization Force was an unnamed band of peasants on the Ove planet colony. Anecdotal records from that time place the first organized action of the group in the year 415 BUE, (1826 FE). At the time, a horde of blood sucking creatures was carving a path through the primary continent, leaving destroyed villages in its wake.
The warriors were led by a group of five individuals with extraordinary - and yet unexplained - abilities. Each of the leaders was said to have the strength of twenty men, the speed of a Hart Bird, and the mind of an elder.
Once the five were able to cleanse Ove of the cursed blood suckers, the group was largely disbanded due to a lack of resources. Four of five continued to travel and exterminate the wicked and vile creatures across the planet. Their strength almost as monstrous as the beings they drew their blades against. The fifth, and most intelligent, had grown weary of conflict and stayed behind to help guide the colony’s survivors where he became known as Ulutt the Waybearer.
T'anu's First Incarnation
Ulutt remained steadfast in his task for over a hundred years as he and his companions worked on different sides of the endless conflict that surrounded the country. As he prepared a feast to welcome them back from the 35th Expedition, he was horrified to learn that his comrades had all been slain by a creature which had appeared in the Southern Ice Fields.
T’anu’s first incarnation was unlike anything Ulutt and the others had ever encountered. It razed everything in its path as it moved across the earth. Mountains crumbled, rivers changed course, and cities were leveled with little more than a wave of a hand. Ulutt tasked the country with calling together an armed force but moved out ahead of them when he found they were moving too slow.
It is believed that when asked how they could defeat a creature with the strength of a thousand men he replied with,
"You send in a thousand-and-one brave fools or one coward with a plan."
There are no records of how Ulutt managed to contain T'anu (a containment that would last long after Ulutt himself - almost nine centuries before they were able to finally destroy his first incarnation) but his legendary deed was all that public believed remained of the heroic figure.
The Nightsword
Having been disappointed by the response of the planetary government to T’anu. Ulutt faked his death and moved into hiding to create a new monster hunting brigade. After gathering the few remaining soldiers who had worked with the former leaders, Ulutt founded the Nightsword and became the first and only Night General.
While maintaining his anonymity, Ulutt used his civilian and government contacts to strengthen the Nightsword until it was strong enough to repel any hostile entity. He worked ever vigilant until his death in 686 BUE at 253 years old.
Not long after his death, the Nightsword was nearly completely wiped from history. All official records of his existence and what happened in the many years he was in charge were stripped away from public record books and pushed out of people's memories.
The current leading theory claims that the purge was caused by the splintering of civilian society which the Nightsword sought to protect. Without the fear of monstrous creatures humans began to turn on themselves. As conflicts arose around the world, it was necessary for the organization to distance itself from any nation that wanted to use its power. It is during this time that the first Arch-General was chosen and the organization went into hiding.
The Great Schism
With the warring period beginning in 561 BUE, the Nightsword began to experience problems from within. After hundreds of years of operation without the Night Commander, the Nightsword were bound to begin to crack from within. Although largely separate from interhuman conflicts, the Nightsword was beginning to struggle to track and destroy evil entities across its expanding zones of operations. This eventually led to the development of two schools of thought within the organization.
The first school believed that the best method of saving human lives was by influencing humanity into moving beyond the solar system stars and preemptively striking any other civilization or entity that may be a threat to humanity. This group planned on helping human civilization quickly advance its technology to begin exploration and the conquest of the stars.
The second school championed for the development of defensive measures for human settlements. They saw no reason in actively targeting other races or beings and instead felt that they should instead let humanity develop on its own under the protective eyes of the Nightsword.
Infighting broke out several times throughout this period which strained the organization even more.
The Great Betrayal
The Grand Betrayal in 531 BUE was what finally reunited the diverging sides for a common goal.
That year, ██████ the Recreant moved to destroy the Nightsword and the rest of humanity with it. After years of conniving and trickery to obtain his position as a Night Guard, he was able to request a transfer to lead the vigil over T'anu's Seal. Not long after, he began his two pronged attack on humanity.
██████ forcefully removed all other Nightsword members from the Temple of the First Incarnation and began undoing the seal. At the same time, groups of Prinites were released within the capitol buildings of multiple planets as well as within the Nightguard headquarters on Ove.
The Nightsword immediately jumped into action to protect the world. Both schools of thought cast aside their differences to take down the Prinites and ██████.
Luckily the Prinites were all still experiencing the effects of the drugs used by the Recreant to transport them and were easily dispatched with the only casualties being three goldfish and a chancellor's cat.
Over at the Temple of Ulutt, the Recreant was subdued as he finished breaking the third of the nine seals.
The Recreant was thrown into the Midnight Well as punishment for his actions.
Joining the Federation
After many years of advancing human technology while operating in the shadows, the Nightsword found itself with less things to do. The Yume Alliance had developed its Yume United Defense Force to the point that most low level monsters could be dispatched by groups of soldiers.
In response, the Nightsword pivoted to dealing with progressively more dangerous entities that the Defense Force was not prepared to handle. These clandestine efforts put enormous strain on the organization, pushing it to the brink of collapse.
Upon the appearance of T’anu’s second incarnation, the Nightsword had no choice but to step in and assist the YUDF after the fall of a second colony planet. Both organizations faced immense losses during the fight on the abandoned moon, Arit.
To accommodate the secrecy of the Nightsword and the glory of the United Defense Force, an agreement was made between the Nightsword and the High Council. The agreement had the Nightsword join the Federation as an independent taskforce which would receive funding and access to resources like never before. Although some groups feared the politicization of the force, the High Council agreed to designate the Nightsword as an Antac Level (Level 13) organization which even members of the High Council are unable to access.
To this day the Nightsword continuous its clandestine operations with full autonomy despite having shed its original name to ensure any possible documentation of its existence is useless.
